DRIFTWOOD, BARK AND BURLS

This work reflects the duality of using organic materials in glass to explore the tension between destruction and creation, capturing moments of transformation

In this series I explore and experiment with organic materials, driftwood and small burls collected in central Idaho. After cleaning the pieces in the studio, It’s coated with fine powdered glass. The pieces are then fired in a kiln at high temperatures, incinerating the wood and leaving behind an unpredictable new form. The heat transforms and merges the materials, creating a completely unique object.

Burles and Driftwood

I collect burls and other materials from fallen trees, dirt roads, trails, creek and river beds. When I return to the studio with what I’ve found I clean and prepare the organic objects for casting in glass. I choose to use black as a way to mimic the after effects of the charring that takes place after a wild fire.
